By generating sustainable revenue streams together with their partners, SpekTech creates green jobs in vulnerable communities and unlocks opportunities for stakeholders to enter the emerging African carbon market.
Sebenza
Sebenza, a new tech platform is working towards changing the narrative by offering free WiFi and content solutions for those who need it most: commuters on taxis and buses. They are bridging the digital divide, promoting social inclusion, and fostering equitable opportunities for the majority of South Africans. In a world where access to information and connectivity is increasingly important, platforms like these are vital in ensuring that no one is left behind. As Sebenza continues to grow, it will be interesting to see the impact that it has on South Africa and beyond.
OpenUp
OpenUp seeks to empower people and government to become active agents in creating positive social change through data, technology and innovative thinking. They do this by: 1. Building impact-centred technology 2. Building impact-centred tools 3. Making and/or opening data 4. Building evidence and knowledge 5. Training of and passing on skills 6. Engaging stakeholders, communities and knowledge-sharing
Lelapa AI
The language barrier stands out as a major obstacle contributing to the prevalence of unbanked individuals. This is where the innovation of Lelapa AIs product, Vulavula, truly shines. Vulavula serves as a pioneering language technology-as-a-service that focuses on languages that have been historically underrepresented. It is strategically designed for application within financial institutions, where AI emerges as the bridge to overcome linguistic barriers, facilitating the provision of online banking services in the account holders preferred language.
Ambani Africa
Ambani Africa is an Edtech start-up focused on teaching young children African languages through augmented reality (AR) and a gaming app. It is a culture-centric and future-facing technology company that specializes in educational products and services. Through the use of augmented reality, animation and gamification, Ambani Africa has successfully developed learner-focused products for language learning.
Lelapa AI
Envisionit Deep AI is a groundbreaking South African company with an incredible team, dedicated to empowering radiologists with AI-enhanced medical imaging diagnosis for the effective screening and detection of tuberculosis, coronavirus pneumonia, breast cancer, and other diseases. Envisionit Deep AIs products include: RATify a platform that allows for a prospective analysis of the AI’s performance in real-time once it has been deployed into an environment. CAT: The computer-aided training (CAT) tool is an intelligent case-solving platform for medical imaging specialist training. Envisionit Deep AI® teleradiology platform: Envisionit Deep AI provides access to qualified teleradiology services with highly experienced, board-certified senior radiologists in South Africa, including certified paediatric radiologists.
To apply, you need to register on this website and fill out the application for the National Round until June 30th, 2025.
The application consists of 17 mandatory questions, but don’t worry:
- 2 are simple yes/no questions,
- 1 is a multiple-choice selection,
- 3 require answers under 200 characters.
That means you’re really answering just 11 full questions, and completing the form should take between 30 to 90 minutes.
Your responses will help WSA National Experts assess your solution's relevance and impact. Based on this information, they will decide whether to nominate you for the WSA Global Contest.
WSA welcomes digitial solutions that
1) Create positive impact (and can provide measurable impact numbers),
2) Are fully launched and operational,
3) Were launched in 2022 or later.
